So much has made Bern’s Steak House a destination and conversation-starter in its almost sixty years in business, but for first-timers the surprise always begins with the building itself. Once a small mall, it’s a multi-leveled, disproportionate construct plastered with white stucco and all but windowless. Without the restaurant's sign out front it could be mistaken for a distribution center or a sound stage. In the foyer, gilded padding wraps around stairway rails and an antique bust sits near an ornate chair that could double, in a pinch, as a throne. Painted portraits hang on a craggy white brick, doused in eerie light from wrought-iron fixtures across the room that reflect the glow of scarlet wallpaper.

The Harry Waugh Dessert Room room was by far my favorite part of Bern's Steakhouse. At first, I thought it was just going to be a room where I can pick a dessert to take home with me. It is our policy to only seat complete parties as delayed guests impact following reservations. The dessert room was a whole another experience of the restaurant with private booth style seating located upstairs. It almost felt like we had stepped back in time as there was a live piano player and our booth had an old school phone where we can phone-in piano requests.
Whatever that experience is – it will differ from person to person – but it must involve enjoying an antiquity. An old bottle of wine, to be purchased and shared with strangers. Jackets and ties are encouraged, but not officially required.

We ask that no t-shirts, tennis shoes, flip-flops, shorts, or torn or faded blue jeans be worn. If any of these items are worn to Bern’s, you may be seated in our lounge area instead of one of the dining rooms. Also, there are 150 wines by the glass, including a flute of Dom Perignon for $52 and — offered, if I’m not mistaken, without irony — a $3.50 pour of Sutter Home White Zinfandel. I watched people order bottles of fruit bomb California blends and glasses of sake or skip alcohol altogether.
We also ordered some whiskey to pair with our dessert which was the perfect ending to our night. Once you step inside the restaurant, you feel like you're in an ancient mansion with tall red walls and various portraits hanging on the walls (similar to Disney's Haunted Mansion). We really enjoyed the Caesar Salad prepared from scratch at our table (extra cost if you choose not to have the salad that comes with the entrees), which was the best caesar salad we've ever had. It was fresh and packed with flavor and had a touch of saltiness from the anchovies. It also paired nicely with the complimentary bread we received that was a bit crunchy like croutons. Florida has quite a few iconic, landmark restaurants that have withstood the test of time, like the famed Columbia restaurant, for instance. Dining at these places not only provides you with a meal that has been perfected over the years but also a place that is riddled with history. We have one particular steakhouse that fits perfectly, making it a treasure and also a delicious meal that will be most memorable.

Then they train for another 8-12 weeks in the dining rooms before they become a full-service waiter on their own. It's incredible and we can definitely tell that the service from these waiters are far different from any other restaurant we've been to. After our meal, we were kindly escorted to take a tour of the kitchen. It's always fun to see the behind-the-scenes and I was amazed at how huge the kitchen was. The steakhouse is sectioned off into different dining halls, so it's hard to get an idea of just how big this place is until you tour the kitchen.
